Furniture restoration is the skilled repair of (antique) furniture while preserving the original materials, construction and character. Unlike simply repainting a piece, it keeps the character — and therefore the value — intact.

French polishing is a traditional finishing technique in which shellac is applied to the wood by hand in many thin layers. It gives a deep, warm shine and lets the wood breathe — the classic finish of much antique furniture.

It varies per piece: it depends on the type of damage, the technique needed and the scope of the work. That's why we work with a free, tailored quote — send a photo and a short description for an initial estimate.

Small repairs are sometimes done within a few days; a full restoration with French polishing can take several weeks. You'll always get a realistic estimate beforehand.

Lacquering applies a (often thick, modern) coat that seals the wood's pores. French polishing with shellac is thinner, applied by hand and typical for antiques: it emphasises the grain and is easy to touch up later.

The workshop is in Weesp (municipality of Amsterdam). Arjen works for clients in Amsterdam, Weesp, 't Gooi, Amstelland and the surrounding area. Pickup and delivery are often possible by arrangement.
